Steven Grossman, Treasurer & Receiver General

Steve Grossman Treasurer and Receiver GeneralSteve Grossman brings to the office of Treasurer and Receiver General a family heritage of public service, a lifetime dedicated to helping others, and years of experience as a hard-working businessman with a sense of responsibility for the well-being of his colleagues and his community.

He is committed to using the full potential of the Treasurers office to protect the publics money, help create jobs, boost small businesses, and bring new standards of transparency and disclosure to state government. Throughout his career he has had an unshakeable commitment to recruiting, hiring, and retaining the most qualified people, based on merit, and that principle will guide his new administration.

Steve has spent the last 35 years creating jobs, managing money, dealing with crises, and finding commonsense solutions to problems as CEO of Grossman Marketing Group in Somerville, a 100-year-old, fourth-generation family business. He grew the companys revenues eightfold, entering new markets and repositioning the company to meet the challenges of an evolving economy. Steve knows what its like to meet a payroll and to keep a business going in tough times, and he brings that expertise and commitment to public office.

He is a leading figure in numerous charitable organizations. Steve serves as a trustee of Project Bread, an advisory board member of the Womens Lunch Place, and chairs the advisory board of Cambridge College. He was a founding board member of Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth (MassINC), a former campaign chair of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, and a founding board member of the Lenny Zakim Fund.

As chairman of both the Massachusetts and national Democratic parties, Steve established a track record as a reformer and builder working aggressively to implement effective management and financial controls while at the same time empowering more activists to participate in political life.

He was elected Treasurer in 2010.

Steve is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School. His wife, Dr. Barbara Wallace Grossman, a theater historian, author, and director, is a professor at Tufts University and serves as Vice Chair of the Massachusetts Cultural Council. They have three sons, David, Ben, and Josh.

Beth Bresnahan, Executive Director

Beth BresnahanTreasurer Steven Grossman named Beth Bresnahan Executive Director of the Massachusetts State Lottery on February 12, 2014, making her the 11th director since the Lottery’s inception in 1971.

Beth has played key roles in guiding the marketing and communications strategies at the Lottery for the better part of the past decade. Prior to her appointment as Executive Director, she served as the Lottery’s Assistant Executive Director and Director of Marketing and Communications, a role in which she helped develop engaging games, promotional programs and outreach strategies that resonated with the Lottery’s players.

As Executive Director, Beth is responsible for leading the operations of the Lottery’s five regional offices and its 400 employees, as well as a statewide network of over 7,400 retailers that work together to generate more than $4.85 billion in revenue and to return nearly $1 billion in profit to the Commonwealth for the 351 cities and towns.

Beth has more than 15 years of experience working in marketing, media relations and government. She first joined the Lottery’s executive staff in January 2005 as the agency’s Communications Director, vacating the position in mid-2007 to work at Boston-based communications firm Rasky Baerlein. She returned to the Lottery in 2011, soon after Treasurer Grossman took office. Her previous experience also includes communications roles at the state Department of Housing and Community Development, Department of Environmental Protection, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Beth earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and also attended Salem State College.

Martin J Benison, Comptroller

Martin J BenisonMartin J. Benison has served as Comptroller of the Commonwealth since 1999. He is chairman of the Governmental Accounting Standards Advisory Council, First Vice President of the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers and Past President of the National Association of State Comptrollers. Commissioner Benison brings extensive expertise in financial management and HR payroll systems and has been instrumental in moving citizens, vendors and employees from paper to web-based interactions with the Commonwealth. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Boston College and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He lives in Reading with his wife and three children.


 

Andrea J. Cabral, Secretary of the Executive Office of Public Safety

Andrea J Cabral, Esq.


Andrea J. Cabral, Esq. was sworn in by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick on January 23, 2013 as the Executive Secretary of Public Safety. From 2002 to 2013, she served as the Sheriff of Suffolk County and the first female sheriff in Massachusetts’ history. Secretary Cabral served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office from 1993-2002.

As Chief of District Court and Community Prosecutions, she trained and supervised 48 prosecutors in Suffolk County’s eight district courts and the Boston Municipal Court. She also created and was Chief of Suffolk County’s first major felony Domestic Violence Unit. From 1991 to 1993, Secretary Cabral worked as an Assistant Attorney General in the Trial and Civil Rights Divisions of the Attorney General’s Office and an Assistant District Attorney in the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office from 1987 to 1991.

She is the author of the book Obtaining, Enforcing and Defending 209A Restraining Orders in Massachusetts, published by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) and co-author of the article, Creating Courtroom Accessibility from the book: Same-Sex Domestic Violence by Beth Levanthal and Sandra Lundy, Esq., Ph.D. In 2007, Secretary Cabral was named an Eisenhower Fellow and traveled to Australia for a month-long study of their criminal justice system.

In 2010, Secretary Cabral was one of 18 national experts appointed to the Science Advisory Board (SAB) by United States Attorney General Eric Holder. The SAB was created to bridge the gap between research and practice in the criminal justice fields. It provides an extra-agency review of and recommendations for the Office of Justice Programs in the Department of Justice. She is on the boards of the Mass Mentoring Partnership, the Fenway Community Health Center and the Dimock Community Health Center.

Secretary Cabral is a graduate of Boston College and Suffolk University Law School.

Tim McMahon, Commissioner

Tim McMahonTimothy McMahon, appointed by Governor Patrick, currently serves as Undersecretary for Administration at the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.  He brings to the Lottery Commission over ten years of experience in operations as the Chief Operating Officer at the Massachusetts State Lottery and as Deputy Commissioner at the Department of Industrial Accidents.  Commissioner McMahon serves on the Board of Directors of Y.O.U., Inc., a leading child welfare and behavioral health organization located in central Massachusetts.  He received his Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Massachusetts.  He resides in Holden with his wife and two children. 

 

 

Beth I. Z. Boland, Commissioner

Beth I.Z. BolandBeth I. Z. Boland, appointed by Governor Patrick, is a partner at the law firm of Bingham McCutchen in its Boston offices. She concentrates her practice on consumer/shareholder class actions, corporate governance and securities issues. Recently named one of Massachusetts’ “most influential attorneys,” she represents clients in SEC and attorney general investigations, shareholder disputes and derivative actions, and fraudulent sales practice class actions and privacy issues in a variety of industries, including financial services, high-tech and manufacturing/retail. Active on many fronts in the legal community, Commissioner Boland co-chaired the Boston Bar Association Task Force on Corporate Governance and recently received from the Women’s Bar Association its highest honor, the Lelia J. Robinson Award, in recognition of her contributions to the legal profession and the greater community. She received her A.B. with honors from the University of Chicago and her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. She lives in Dover with her husband and three children.
