Hanover, Mass. man claims top prize in new Lucky For Life lottery game

Bruce Campbell, 39, wins $1,000 a day, every day, for the rest of his life

A 39 year-old Hanover, Massachusetts man today claimed the first top prize in the new multi-state lottery game “Lucky for Life.”

Bruce Campbell was awarded a ceremonial check for $1,000 a day for life by State Treasurer Steven Grossman at a press conference held this afternoon at the Massachusetts State Lottery’s Braintree headquarters. Campbell won the prize after matching all six numbers drawn (1-2-6-10-19, Lucky Ball 15) in Lucky for Life’s inaugural drawing on Thursday, March 15. The odds of matching all six numbers to win the game’s top prize are just over 1 in 13.8 million.

Campbell stopped into Myette’s Country Store in Hanover last Thursday, the day of Lucky for Life’s first drawing, and asked the store owner for a suggestion on what Lottery game to play. Tracy Myette Brown, who was a high school classmate of the frequent customer, suggested he try the new Lucky for Life game, so Campbell filled out a bet slip using numbers significant to him – birthdays, including his own, and an old hockey number.

The following day, Campbell received a Facebook message from Myette Brown directing him to check his numbers because her store sold the winning ticket. Campbell, who works as a plumber, was in his van having lunch when he phoned into the store to inquire. After reading the numbers on his ticket to Kevin Brown, the owner’s husband, Campbell was stunned to learn he was the game’s top prize winner. He never finished his lunch, but he soon headed to a nearby bank to put the winning ticket in a safe deposit box. Campbell’s $1,000 a day for life prize, which will be paid out on a weekly basis, is guaranteed for a minimum of 20 years, but will be paid out for the duration of his lifetime. When asked if he had big plans for his winnings, Campbell said he will invest for the future. He did reveal that he and his longtime girlfriend Dawn will be splurging on a Cadillac and a new Harley motorcycle, but beyond that he “will remain the same hard-working blue collar guy that he’s always been.”

Myette’s Country Store also benefitted from Campbell’s luck. The store received $50,000 for selling the winning ticket – the maximum Lottery retailer commission in Massachusetts. Myette’s, a fifth-generation, family-owned business, has been a licensed retailer since the Lottery’s inception 40 years ago.

Lucky for Life is the first lottery game to be played in all six New England states. There are 10 total ways to win. Players must select five (5) numbers out a field of 40, and one (1) Lucky Ball number out of a field of 21. Those matching all six numbers drawn win the game’s $1,000 a day for life top prize.

In addition to its extraordinary top prize, the game also features a $25,000 second prize and other exciting cash prizes ranging from $2,000 to $2. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 6.6. While there is not a cash option offered on the top prize, all lower-tiered prizes are paid out in one-time, lump sum payments. All winning tickets must be redeemed in the state they were purchased.

Lucky for Life tickets are $2 each and can be purchased at Lottery retailers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Drawings are held every Monday and Thursday at 10:38 pm in Connecticut and aired live on FOX CT/Channel 61 in Hartford with game results and drawing videos posted for Massachusetts players on the Lottery’s website -- masslottery.com.

BRIDGEWATER MAN WINS $25,000 LOTTERY PRIZE WITH NUMBERS HEARD ON RADIO SKIT
winner

William Donovan of Bridgewater matches 5 of 6 numbers in last night’s inaugural “Lucky for Life” drawing after hearing them on WROR’s Loren & Wally Morning Show

It is a beautiful day in William Donovan’s neighborhood after the Bridgewater, Massachusetts man learned he won $25,000 in last night’s inaugural drawing for the multi-state lottery game “Lucky for Life” playing a number combination he heard earlier in the day on 105.7 WROR’s Loren & Wally Morning Show.

The radio skit featured a Mr. Rogers impersonator telling the Loren & Wally crew about his recent lottery win and all of the exciting things he was doing with his newfound, but yet-to-be-claimed, riches -- including telling the higher ups at the network exactly what he thought of them. After “Mr. Rogers” reads the winning numbers from his ticket aloud: “1-2-6-10-19 and 27,” Loren and Wally inform him that the last number on the winning ticket was actually 28.

“Mr. Rogers’” experience didn’t deter Donovan, a truck-driving grandfather of 10, from trying his luck with those numbers in the Lottery’s new Lucky for Life game. He visited Patriots Pub in East Bridgewater and played 1-2-6-10-19, but when it came to selecting the Lucky Ball number both 27 and 28 were too high in the field of numbers to choose from, so he went with 21. Donovan was shocked to learn that just like in the radio skit, he missed the game’s top prize by just one number – the Lucky Ball drawn last night was 15.

When asked what he planned to do with his winnings, Donovan jokingly replied, “I’m going to party with everyone but Joe.” And for those who may be wondering, Joe knows why.

Massachusetts players fared very well in Lucky for Life’s, the first lottery game to be played exclusively in all six New England states, inaugural drawing. In addition to Donovan’s win, a ticket sold at Myette’s Country Store in Hanover, won the game’s $1,000 a day for life top prize, and a ticket sold at Shaw’s Supermarket in Canton also won $25,000.

Lucky for Life tickets are $2 each and can be purchased at Lottery retailers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Drawings are held every Monday and Thursday at 10:38 pm in Connecticut and aired live on FOX CT/Channel 61 in Hartford with game results and drawing videos posted here and on www.NEluckyforlife.com.

She didn’t inform her children about the win until this early morning and told Lottery officials, “It has been the longest two days of my life.” She plans to spend the winnings wisely, first by helping her mother undertake some necessary home repairs.

The winner of the raffle’s sole $1 million prize also lost some sleep as he waited for the Lottery to reopen after the long weekend. The family was thrilled to learn that one of the three tickets was a big winner. Tiemann described it as an “incredible family experience.” He plans to use some of the winnings toward his daughters’ college funds and also to send his mother-in-law on a vacation to Italy.
